Before we drove the 5 hour drive back to Auckland The Boy and I took Quinn for a walk to tire him out (there’s nothing worse than a hyperactive little dog on a long car trip. Last time he wiggled under the drivers chair and kept popping out by the pedals).

The easiest way to tire him out is to have him run back and forth between The Boy and I, standing maybe 50 metres apart.

Worked like a charm :)

What kind of dog is that? Is it a yorkie? And does he bark a lot?

(Hah – I want one so badly but have been warned that I am not allowed any ‘noisy’ canine friends!)

  2. Can you devise a way to tire out my dog too? Every time I think I’ve really got him EXHAUSTED, he sees a squirrel in the backyard and is all sorts of energetic. A squirrel? Is that a squirrel? ARE YOU PEOPLE DELIVERING DESSERT TO MY BACKYARD? And then he spends the next three hours running and jumping around trying to reach the squirrels who are smart enough to sit just out of reach and throw pecans at his head.

    It’s very tiring to watch.

@Charlee – He’s a miniature Yorkie, yeah :) He’s actually pretty little (think 2kg little. Most Yorkies are around 3-4kg) and he does bark, but not alot! The first time he barked we all got such a fright cause he’d never done it before. I think it really comes down to the individual dog, though. Quinn only barks when we’re playing tug, or he’s wrestling with another dog, or if he hears someone walking up the drive/at the door. Our friend has a pomeranian, and she barks ALL THE TIME. And mostly at nothing! It’s very odd. Good luck finding a pup :)

@Sarah – I have the same problem with Quinn! Perhaps not with Squirrels (as NZ is Squirrel-less) but I expect that after a day of daycare, or a super hours long walk that he’ll crash out and settle down and be tired like any other respectable dog would. But no, he gets all hyperactive and taunts the cat and runs up and down the hall like a mad thing.

The running between The Boy and I seems to work okay (assuming that he does this for aaaages), enough for him to settle down in the car for a little bit (we were stopping all the time so he could get out, empty his bladder and run somemore. It got to the point where we’d slow down just a bit and he’d get up to look out the window to see if we were stopping to get out).

Actually, the best way I’ve found to tire out my little dog is to get him a play date where he spends the whole time wrestling, or running and chasing. After all his play dates he’s been exhausted! Perhaps that’s the way to go?

  4. Too cute! Where do they find the energy?

  5. Liz says:

That is so *completely* awesome. Hah!

  6. Elly says:

@Maggie – I have no idea! He’s a little bundle of energy he is :)

@Liz – woo! A comment from Miss Liz! XD! And yeah, TOTALLY AWESOME! <3!

Love it!! I wanted to get a Yorkie before we settled on Schipperke’s – I’ll have to post pictures of the boys so you can see, they’re just a little taller than a yorkie but they look like black German Shepards.

  8. Elly says:

@Desiree – Thanks! I love that shot too :) It cracks me up that his tongue is poking out :)

@Kyla – Hahaha, cheers! I thought about getting a Schipperke pup, but when I saw Quinn there was no question that he was going to be mine :) And please post – I’d love to see your pups!
