A while ago I stopped by to see a friend, and her little one was colouring with crayons. We joked around and discussed how things were when WE were kids, and she mentioned watching a Seasme Street about how crayons are made.

The great thing about the internet is that you can still find that stuff from years and years ago, and so I searched youTube and tada:

As I watched it, I thought about how labour intensive it was. While yes, alot of it was still done by machinery, it’s not likely that that guy is still manually scrapping off the excess wax. I was right, you know. I found another segment, not by Seasme Street:

More machines, less people. I was relieved to see that they still use people for some of it. Just not as much anymore.

Still, I guess times change? It was a cute trip back, no matter how briefly it lasted. :)

Wow! That is SO cool! Doesn’t it just make you want to be an engineer!!

@Heidi – Ha, I think I’d rather be a colourer than an engineer. I thought it was cool though, glad you think so too! :)

@Desiree – Mine too! I was pretty stoked to find it (which is why I figured it was okay to post about it :) And your most welcome – woo!

i totally just watched both of those until the very end…i love watching how stuff is made. it is sad that there are less and less people doing these jobs, meaning machines are slowly taking over, but i’m not so sure i’d ever want to do something like putting a label on a crayon for 40 hours a week…

  6. Elly says:

@Lys – yeah, I know what you mean! It’s kind of inefficient to use people in horribly boring and repetitive jobs but at the same time it’s a job, with money which is good to give people! Okay, that wasn’t very eloquent, but you know what I mean. :) Thanks for the comments, hey! :)

I feel like I was deprived as a child…how could I have NEVER seen that sesame street crayon video until now?! It was so amazing! I was gasping out loud at how amazing it all was. And could the workers be any happier? I think not. Thanks for sharing!
