I went down to the mall yesterday, and low and behold there are signs where previously, there were none.

After calming down some (I got myself worked up around a sexism/discrimination theory) I guessed street art. Most of you guessed (or were amused by) misplaced toilet signage. One of you even had a weird muslim seperatist theory. In the end we were all wrong. It’s actually:

Parking for seniors. Not that you’d know based on the signage. I don’t think that symbol in anyway says “Seniors”. Alas, it’s just another example of the local council being ridiculous. Perhaps they thought it would be politically incorrect to age the symbol people to actually signify age.

Just quietly, I still prefer the misplaced toilet meaning. Hah! :)

  1. Seniors. Huh. I wonder if they define ‘senior’ anywhere?

Ooh. I love special parking! Even when it’s nonsensical and indecipherable. It’s so rare in L.A. There’s one grocery store with family parking here and the spots are always taken by sports cars.

But also? I would totally pee there if need be.

@Dee – I wondered that too! I think it’s a nice gesture though, providing space for the elderly. Kind of like standing up on the bus or something :) Pity it’s not implemented super well . . .

@JJ – Oh La! I’ve been there a few times and on my first visit I was intimidated by your ridiculously big cars and roads with too many lanes. I guess bigger cars and more roads mean an increase in parking demand? And Ha! That’s awesome :)

  4. Yeah, I would have never guessed that!

When I was living in France, there was a similarly confusing sign by a public pool. It showed a stick figure man squatting, and the image had an X through it. After months of trying to guess what it was, somebody finally put an explanation right next to it: No nudity or pooping in the pool.

You know, there used to be a blog about signs like this…

@Sarah – Ha! Silly Signs indeed! Well, at least it’s nice to know that there are stupid signs all over the place, and not just here :P
